Project overview

This project retrofits two ships. The first adds a Low-Pressure Exhaust Gas Recirculation (LP-EGR) system with a particulate filter and SOx scrubber to reduce emissions by 90% and protect the cooler. The second upgrades the MSC Topaz to a dual-fuel (diesel-LNG) system with a two-stroke low-speed engine, ready for alternative fuels.

DP World’s Shipping Solutions has introduced DP World London, its first methanol dual-fuel container vessel. The 1,250-TEU, Portugal-flagged vessel was built in China and delivered in April 2026. The vessel owned by Elbdeich Reederei and operated by DP World's Shipping Solution's business, will serve North European routes. DP World London completed its first methanol bunkering in Rotterdam in June 2026, with Unibarge providing bunkering services and Methanex supplying the methanol. The vessel measuring 148 meters in length, forms part of DP World’s continued investment in its fleet across key trade corridors.

Terminal operator Termont upgraded the outdoor lighting system at the Port of Montréal’s Maisonneuve Terminal to improve safety, reliability, and environmental performance. Developed with Concept Illumination, the LED retrofit reduces energy consumption by more than 80%, lowers maintenance needs, and minimizes light pollution by placing the new luminaires parallel to the ground, reducing glare and focusing illumination on work areas. The project was completed in four weeks with minimal disruption to terminal operations and demonstrates how smart lighting technologies can enhance efficiency and sustainability in active port environments.

Harbor Breeze Cruises launched El Escudo, a 350-passenger hybrid harbor craft at the Port of Los Angeles featuring some of the newest emission-reduction technologies on the market. The vessel is capable of operating in fully electric, diesel, or hybrid modes. Development and testing was through the Los Angeles Marine Emission Reduction (LA MER) Project with financial support from a $31 million CARB grant and $30 million in project partner matching funds. The result of a Port-led partnership with Harbor Breeze Cruises, the California Air Resources Board (CARB), and the Port of Long Beach, the project demonstrates scalable low-emission harbor craft technology.

The Port of Québec is developing shore power infrastructure at Wharf 30 and Wharf 101 to enable cruise and cargo vessels to connect to the electrical grid while berthed, eliminating the need to run auxiliary engines. Supported by the Government of Québec, the project will reduce greenhouse gas emissions (nearly 70,000 tonnes at Wharf 30 and 5,600 tonnes at Wharf 101 over 10 years), improve air quality, and lower noise pollution. Expected to be operational in 2028, the initiative advances the Port’s broader maritime decarbonization strategy.

APM Terminals Pier 400 has introduced a dedicated Clean Truck Express Lane for vehicles registered in the Port of Los Angeles Clean Truck Program. The lane reduces gate wait times by an average of nine minutes per trip, improving efficiency while lowering energy use and emissions. The initiative supports California’s transition to zero-emission trucking and forms part of APM Terminals’ broader strategy to decarbonize port operations and supply chains.

APM Terminals Pier 400 is ambitious to achieve zero emissions in their operations ahead of the 2030 deadlines set forth in the Clean Air Action Plan. As a critical node in the green corridor that is forming between Los Angeles and key cities in China, Pier 400 has invested in terminal electrification and support for alternative-fuel vessels. A key milestone was the arrival of Maersk's methanol-enabled containership, Alette Maersk, at Pier 400, demonstrating the growing integration of low-emission maritime transport and sustainable port operations. As one of APM Terminals' global electrification pilot sites, Pier 400 is expanding electric cargo-handling equipment and infrastructure to support cleaner supply chains and accelerate progress toward net-zero emissions.

APM Terminals Los Angeles along with project partners Aldridge Electric commissioned new rail yard charging infrastructure at Pier 400. This project will support the electrification of cargo-handling operations and accelerate the transition to zero-emission equipment. This self-funded project includes seven 120 kW dual-plug chargers, two 200 kW dual-plug chargers, and four 19.2 kW single-plug chargers, providing charging capacity for the terminal’s growing electric fleet. This is one amongst several decarbonization projects at APM Terminals Los Angeles.

Electric Thames is a groundbreaking initiative led by UK Power Networks to pioneer the electrification of vessels and supporting infrastructure along the River Thames. This project is developing an innovative, integrated energy system and a robust business case that fully accounts for the impacts of decarbonising vessels, docks, and quays along the Thames. It is supported by the Ofgem Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF) and is a partnership collaboration between Marine Zero – stakeholder engagement, energy mapping and integration, UK Power Networks (UKPN) – project lead, grid connectivity & capacity, LCP Delta – Investment modelling, EV.Energy – Smart charging consultancy, and the Port of London Authority (PLA) – Operational and technical guidance.
