Operational efficiency is one of the most immediate and scalable levers for improving fuel savings, resilience, and decarbonisation in the maritime sector. As zero-emission fuels increase costs, efficiency gains are essential for competitiveness and compliance. Despite proven tools and well-understood optimisation levers, most companies capture only a fraction of the potential value due to misaligned incentives, siloed decision-making, fragmented KPIs, and risk-averse commercial structures that reinforce inefficient behaviour. Insights from a Global Maritime Forum workshop underscored the importance of aligning incentives and outcomes.
